Personal Belonging is a collaborative exhibit between artists Emily Kray and Sophie Schwabv exploring personal items that we associate with our identities. This exhibition showcases the volume, weight, and density of objects that add notes of representation to our identities: the objects we hold with greed and longing, objects with tensile potential, and objects that posit the difference between comfort and the unknown. Pivoting around representational aesthetics and towards abstraction allows these objects to portray an unseen dynamic within them. This also gives us clues as to how they aid in formulating our own identities.

Emily Kray, affectionately known as Troctopus, is a visual artist working primarily with watercolor and book arts to investigate the complexities and fallacies of memory by manipulating our attachment to nostalgic and familiar forms. He began his artistic career by living and working in Las Vegas, Nevada and received her BFA from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2020. That same year, he began his MFA at the University of Arizona, Tucson. He has participated in group shows nationally since 2016 and has had solo shows across Nevada and in Arizona. Since then, Kray continues to make art with a focus on community involvement and nostalgic comfort with a goal to graduate in the Spring of 2023.

Sophie Schwab is an artist and musician currently studying at the University of Arizona in the Fine Arts Program. Growing up in Southern California exposed them to a melting pot of cultures and art scenes, and through reflecting on these experiences, Sophie seeks to channel their upbringing in a multifaceted approach within their practice. Sophie’s art making practice spans across both the physical and the digital space to allow them to more fully express their passion.
