JOHN KONRAD
Bio (provided by artist): John is a cartoonist and illustrator based in Tucson, Arizona. He’s currently pursuing a degree in illustration at the University of Arizona School of Art. His love for comics and staying up too late inspired him to create a coming-of-age comedy webcomic titled Adventures Close to Home, which is currently ongoing. His work is inspired by creators like Tillie Walden and Bryan Lee O’Malley, and media like punk rock and horror movies. He loves riot grrrl on the weekends, bedroom pop on the weekdays, and big sweaters regardless of the weather.

For this painting, I wanted to play on the idea of gas stations and convenience stores being a liminal space. Places like this are so ubiquitous and identical-looking that they often feel more like a limbo between places than an actual place. I thought that painting a ghost drinking a 7-Eleven Slurpee would be a cute way to communicate that feeling.
